Food Scene

15 mins walk (0.6 miles) This local pub is less of a bar and more of a restaurant. The food is pretty decent as you can see in the menu at the back of this guide. If you drive it’s just a few minutes and parking is opposite the Domino’s Pizza car park but on your left. Whether you walk or drive, turn right out of Seton Drive (beware there is no path and the road is narrow) and after a few hundred metres turn left over the railway and when you get to the lights you’ll see The Hoggett across the road on the left. If driving go straight across the light and the car park entrance is immediately after the pub.

Just to confuse things there are two White Heart pubs in Hook. And the newer looking one is called the Old White Heart! It’s run by Greene King and frequented by the younger crowd. There is a reasonable garden for the summer. The food is chain pub food. It’s an 11 min walk, turning left out of our road, after 300m you will reach the A30, cross over and continue walking and you’ll find the pub on your right after a few minutes. There is a car park if you drive, immediately after the pub on the right.

This is the old coach house now called the White Heart Pub. More of a drinking pub it also does food and attracts more of an older crowd (older than teenagers, that is). It’s a few minutes further up the A30 but possibly worth it. Continue past the Old White heart to the roundabout and cross straight over where the White Heart will be on your right. There is a good sized car park and a nice garden for the good weather days.

Next to the railway station is The Raven. Also run by Greene King, what you see is what you get. Either walk or drive to the roundabout in the centre of Hook and turn right, where you’ll find the Raven 100m or so down on the left hand side. The car park is after the pub and is Pay and Display some of the time so check the payment rules. If you are walking there is a short cut through the Elizabeth Hall. Walk left out of our road to the A30 and cross over. On the right there is a footpath to the Elizabeth Hall car park (Next to the little New Road and opposite Sheldon’s lane). When you get to the Elizabeth Hall car park walk out the exit to Raven Road, turn right and you’ll be at The Raven i

This is a nice sit down restaurant and takeaway, generally seen as higher quality than the other place but the only sit down Tandoori nearby.

Probably the most expensive pub in the area for food but every few days they get another 5* rating on TripAdvisor so Phil and Sandra must be doing something right! It’s a 10 minute drive towards Basingstoke then out into the little village of Mapledurwell. There’s a sample menu in this guide. Ask if you need directions.

This is a nice pub with home cooked food. The menu is all invented by Lee, the landlord and often features local game and produce. It’s a 7 minute drive away in the next village of Rotherwick. There is a sample menu in the Menus section.

This lovely Mill sits on the river and has a water wheel inside as you go downstairs. The menu and service are nice and it’s only a 5 minute drive away. There is a sample menu later on in the Menu’s section. There are more pubs in the area and restaurants in Basingstoke and Fleet too. If you need any information on other local facilities please don’t hesitate to ask.

Everything Else

I would not suggest the bar or restaurant but for £7 you can have a swim and a sauna and use the gym here. If you are used to European spa hotels this is not going to excite you but by Brit standards and for just a few quid you could do a lot worse. There is also a steam room and a Jacuzzi outside. It’s more of a 3 min drive but you can walk it in 17 minutes if you don’t mind the lane with no paths!

Shopping

In the centre of Hook there is a medium sized Tesco, open 6am-11pm every day except Sunday when it’s 10am-4pm. From our house head left into Hook, right at the roundabout and it’s over the railway bridge on the left. About a 3 minute drive or 12-15 minute walk.
