Probably my favorite larger music venue in town. This place used to be the old skating rink, back in the day, and still has plenty of personality. They host some fairly big names from time to time (They Might Be Giants, Michael Fronti, Steep Canyon Rangers, Warren Haynes, Louis C.K., etc.). They have a bar at one side and a nice porch to relax on if you want to get away for a moment. Located downtown within easy walking distance to several restaurants and bars. http://theorangepeel.net/events/

This is where I usually like to go for my birthday or other big occasion... Although we have so many fantastic restaurants, so it's hard to choose. The Marketplace is Asheville's oldest high caliber restaurant and has never been a disappointment. Their menu rotates regularly and with seasonal availability. If you're lucky enough to come during the local mushroom season, they do some amazing specials. (I'll never forget their fried chicken-of-the-wood...) They also do terrific cocktails. Occasional live music at the bar. https://marketplace-restaurant.com/

Wonderful middle-eastern food, music and deserts. This place is also my favorite secret brunch location (Saturdays & Sundays)! You wouldn't guess it, but they do a killer southern style brunch menu (with a few middle eastern twists - try their lamb and eggs to see what I mean). Friendly service and good french toast make this a hidden gem! When the other brunch places around town are swamped with 45 minute waits, you can usually get a table here on a Sunday in less than 5 minutes and have just as nice a breakfast!

It would be a shame to come through Asheville and not at least take a short drive on the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway... Part of the public works projects which helped to pull the US out of the Great Depression, the stonework, tunnels and bridges of the parkway still stand along this breathtaking, historic drive. Great sunset to sunrise, and especially breathtaking with the changing of the seasons (people flock here from across the country to watch the leaves turn in Autumn), the Parkway hosts trailheads to some of the best local hikes. http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/

The historic center of Asheville. A great meeting place from which to start your exploration of the city. It is not unlikely that you may find a street fair going on if you arrive here on a weekend between April and October. It is common to find street performers busking here as on many of Asheville's street corners.

Parks & Nature

Trail difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Max Patch is near the town of Hot Springs, about 45 minutes from Asheville. Sunset over Max Patch in autumnThis grassy bald is definitely a favorite with true 360-degree views of the Smoky Mountains and an intersection with the Appalachian Trail. For a sunset to remember, get there early and bring a picnic and a blanket—and your camera. After you're done with your hike, check out the town of Hot Springs - take an hour soak in a hot tub at the Hot Springs spa and have a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants (Iron Horse Station or Spring Creek Tavern). https://www.nchotsprings.com/

You will need a ticket to the estate and house to access the grounds, but if you do, a hike on the beautiful land is a great bonus to the experience of the house. With 8,000 acres of nearly intact Western North Carolina landscape, the grounds at Biltmore are at least as beautiful as the house. The roughly 22 miles of trails here run through meadows with views of the French Broad River, along the river itself and past the estate’s agricultural fields. The majority of the terrain is flat and easy enough for young kids to hike. Picnicking is allowed in the Lagoon area.
