My favourite place in Dungarvan for lunch. Always buzzing. Try the Late for Work Bagel or the Samon bagel. Small soup/wedges or chips on the side for a little extra. Good value.

Fabulous cycle path. The Railway Cottage has plenty of outdoor seating and is just a short cycle from Dungarvan on the cycle path. Breath-taking views between Dungarvan and Durrow. Lovely cycle to Durrow. About 12 km (45 mins on bike). Stop top at O'Mahonys shop for tea/coffee/ice-cream etc (closed due to Covid at the minute- bring a picnic!!). The peninsula that you see to the right of the apartment is known as The Cunnigar (An Coinigéar). It is a 5km sand spit that juts across Dungarvan Bay from An Rinn. The Colligan River flows to the sea through Dungarvan Bay stopping the Cunnigar from ever reaching the Abbeyside Church which you can see on the other side. The Cunnigar has lots of wildlife including rabbits and grasshoppers, while swallows dart low over the scrubland catching insects. Common blue butterfiles and small copper butterflies can be seen here in their hundreds as well as the occasional clouded yellow butterfly. Hundreds of shorebirds follow the tideline and it ebbs and flows along the bay. It is the top site in Waterford for rare waders such as little Ringed and Americian Golden Plover. Smaller birds such as wagtails and pipits dig for grubs along the scrubland while herring gulls soar overhead. Low tide uncovers hundreds of oyster bags, stacked in neat lines stretching out across the bay. The clean waters of Dungarvan Bay allow for the healthy farming of hundreds of thousands of oysters. You can see these being farmed from the apartment. It is a lovely walk which can be accessed from Ring but be careful and plan your walk around low tide or you could get cut off from shore! Takes about two hours. The walk starts at Mooneys Pub, which can be found on the R674. From Mooneys walk down the hill around the bend and pass a disused cemetery on you left. Turn right at the T-junction heading towards the college, which you will pass on your right. Now the road meanders along with the bay on its right until you come to the entrance to An Coinigéar, this is a sideroad that leads down to the sea, where there is a car park. There is a river to the left of the sideroad and a plaque saying ‘An Coinigéar’. Follow the curve of the shore out to the long sandy spit that sticks out into Dungarvan Bay. Try to walk as far as the highest sand dunes to capture the full flavour of the walk. The walk is memorable for its views to the Knockmealdown and Comeragh Mountains and to Helvick Head.

This building started life as a butter market in the late 1690s. The area in front of the building became known as the market place. Overhead were the Council chambers. In 1868 the Market House was bought by Robert A. Merry, a local business man, who used it as offices and stores for his grocery and spirits business. The area in front of the Market House is reputed to have been used for public executions. In 1984 the building was restored and for many years housed the town library and museum. Today it is an exhibition space for local artists.

Mahon Falls is an 80m waterfall nestled in the Comeragh Mountains near Lemybrien, County Waterford. There is a car park close to the falls with a not too strenuous walk to get to them. Lovely to cycle to the Gold Coast Hotel for lunch. Just under 5km on a bike. On the Greenway for most of it. Turn right after the first bridge. The soup in the Gold Coast is always good. Order soups with rolls and chips to share with mayo, then enjoy soup and chip butties. Small playground beside the hotel. Pier jumping optional but the tide has to be fully in.

Just to the right of the apartment is St John's Castle or Dungarvan Castle. The castle has been described as Anglo-Norman, and was founded in 1185 by Prince John, on the mouth of the Colligan River. It was amongst a number of castles built around this time in the south east of Ireland. The castle was used as a barracks during the Irish Civil War, then taken by the IRA who upon leaving in August 1922, set fire to the structure. After the foundation of the Garda Síochána in the Free State, the castle was restored and became the local Garda Station until 1987. After 1987 the castle fell into disrepair again, but under the management by Dúchas was restored and now provides guided tours, an exhibition and an audio-visual show.

Beautiful sandy beach. Part of the beach has lifeguards so if you want to swim that part of the beach is the safest and it's best to park just before what was the Clonea Strand Hotel. Gordons shop is a must visit for their fabulous ninety nines! Or Gordons takeway for fish and chips. You can also park at either end of the beach and walk the full length. The carpark at the Ballyclamper end is usually quiet.

A fabulous cliff walk with breath-taking views. About 20 mins drive from Dungarvan. The walk is approx 5km. It should take you just over an hour to complete. Look out for the yellow arrow on brown background signs to lead the way. Not suitable for little ones or buggies From the village, head up past the Cliff House Hotel. This walk goes along cliff-top paths and just at the beginning you will pass St Declan’s Well. You will pass a shipwreck known as Sampson. It was wrecked here on a stormy night in 1988. Two lookout posts are then visible. One from circa 1867. It was built during the Napoleonic wars as an early warning system if the French tried to invade Ireland. And, the second was used for observation during World War II. You will also pass Father O’Donnell’s Well. The walk is covered with a variety of flora, fauna and birdlife and some of the best stunning coastal scenery you’ll see along Ireland’s Ancient East. As you continue down towards the village, you’ll also get to see a 12th Century Cathedral and Ardmore’s Round Tower which is one of the best preserved towers in Ireland. This Round Tower is also the first known Round Tower in Ireland. It stood a siege in August, 1642. Two ogham stones are kept in the old cathedral – one of which constitutes the longest known ogham inscription in Ireland.

The Lookout, where the apartment is situated

By the 1870s Dungarvan had become a popular destination for seaside holidays. The area to the was left of the apartment was built towards the end of the 1800s. This became known locally as ‘The Lookout’ as the wives and families of the fishermen would look out to sea there and await the safe return of their loved ones. In 1895, the park was developed near The Lookout and shortly after its opening the bandstand was erected. From The Lookout, you can see the Ring/Helvick coastline and the Cunnigar, a narrow peninsula that projects into Dungarvan Bay and is a haven for seabirds - see above.

Parking

In the middle of the town, there is half an hour free parking but you HAVE to get a ticket from the machine which is free but if you don't display this ticket you WILL get a parking fine. Many visitors to Dungarvan get caught.
