Sightseeing
Looping 9.6 miles around the edge of Portland, the coast path offers fantastic views across the Jurassic Coast and varied walking through a dramatic landscape.
For a shorter option, take a bus (or taxi) to Portland Bill and then walk back along the west coast of the island, exploring Tout Quarry along the way.

South West Coast Path

For an easy buggy-friendly walk try the Nothe Gardens in Weymouth. Great for hide and seek, squirrel spotting and rock-pooling at Newton's Cove.
Make a day trip by combining with a visit to the historic Nothe Fort, lunch at the Stone Pier Cafe and crabbing on Weymouth harbourside (there are buckets to borrow at the cottage - visit Harbour Stores for bait).
In summer you can also catch a rowing boat from the harbourside (near the lifeboat) over to Weymouth Beach.
The Nothe

Running along the north edge of Portland Harbour, the Rodwell Trail is a flat, traffic free route that links the causeway with Weymouth Town Centre.

Rodwell Trail
Running along the north edge of Portland Harbour, the Rodwell Trail is a flat, traffic free route that links the causeway with Weymouth Town Centre.
Whether walking, cycling or scooting, it's the ideal place to get a bit of exercise with the promise of a beach and an ice-cream at the other end!
Park on Osprey Road (Weymouth) and head down the ramp to access the trail. Turn right for a short stroll to sandy Smallmouth Cove, or turn left for Sandsfoot Gardens, Castle Cove Beach and Weymouth Town Centre beyond.

Beautiful Chesil Cove is just 5 minutes walk from the cottage. A stunning location for swimming on calm summer days and a dramatic place to watch the storms in winter. From here you can take the coast path up to the top of Portland for spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast.
There is also a rocky footpath along the shore (beyond the beach huts) which makes an enjoyable short walk.
On a flat, calm day the water is lovely and clear and ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. However swimming/paddling is dangerous when there are waves - keep well away from the water's edge and enjoy the views from a safe distance.

Chesil Plajı
Beautiful Chesil Cove is just 5 minutes walk from the cottage. A stunning location for swimming on calm summer days and a dramatic place to watch the storms in winter. From here you can take the coast path up to the top of Portland for spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast.
There is also a rocky footpath along the shore (beyond the beach huts) which makes an enjoyable short walk.
On a flat, calm day the water is lovely and clear and ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. However swimming/paddling is dangerous when there are waves - keep well away from the water's edge and enjoy the views from a safe distance.

Both routes involve steep steps, uneven ground and lovely views.

Church Ope Cove
Pennsylvania RoadEscape the crowds with a day trip to beautiful Church Ope Cove. The pebble beach is sheltered in the prevailing south westerly wind (when Chesil Beach is rough) and the water is lovely and clear for swimming if you're feeling brave!

Learn to windsurf in the 2012 Olympic sailing waters. Friendly tuition for all levels is available at the Official Test Centre, just 5 minutes drive from the cottage.
The centre also offers kit hire (including wetsuits) as well as wind foiling, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and wing foiling courses. Highly recommended!

Learn to windsurf in the 2012 Olympic sailing waters. Friendly tuition for all levels is available at the Official Test Centre, just 5 minutes drive from the cottage.
The centre also offers kit hire (including wetsuits) as well as wind foiling, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and wing foiling courses. Highly recommended!
