本州の多くの都市とは異なり、当初から計画的に建設が進められてきた札幌は、この「大通公園」を境に南北に分けられています。つまり大通公園から北は官庁街、南側にはススキノなどの商業街、歓楽街として計画され、現在でもその街並みが残っています。観光客はもちろんのこと、地元の人々からも愛されている公園です。 大通公園には、さまざまな樹木や花が植えられ、四季を通じて人々の目を楽しませてくれます。また、初夏は「よさこいソーラン祭」、冬は「さっぽろ雪祭り」のメイン会場と、一年を通してイベントの会場として用いられています。
