ITINERARIO MONUMENTALE E CASTELLI [35] - BASILICA DI SAN FRANCESCO DI PAOLA The square where once the troops of the Kingdom of Naples used to stand, is crowned by the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. It was built on the structure of the Pantheon in Rome, at the behest of King Ferdinand I, as a votive offering to San Francesco di Paola, who had interceded for him to return to the throne of Naples after the interlude of Murat.

It’s the most important neoclassical italian churchresembling Rome’s Phanteon. It was wanted byFerdinando IV di Borbone to thank San Francescodi Paola who conquered back the kingdom.It was built between 1816 and 1836.
