a MUST see place. sunset is breath taking up there. weather is around 40-50° so bring warm cloths and jacket. only 4x4 can go up there. bring lots of water with you. kids under 12 are NOT allowed to go to highest point, but kids are allowed to visit the visitor center and stargazing area.
Mauna Kea is a great place to explore. There are a few beautiful scenic hikes and the evening star gazing is spectacular. It is best to go before sunset and stop by the visitor center which closes at 7PM. Be sure to study the website for restrictions about going to the summit where is not recommended for children under 13 and four wheel drive is required. Also, the elevation is 9,200 ft at the visitor center, so be sure to dress warmly because it cold up there at night.

The Visitor Information Center is located at the 9,200 foot elevation level on the slope of Mauna Kea Mountain. When you drive here you will be above the clouds. Restrooms open 24 hours daily. May be closed due to the COVID Restrictions. Children are not allowed to go beyond this altitude to the summit of the mountain due to lack of stratosphere.
One of the most amazing news on the planet. (See my photos). This is a one of a kind spot. This also requires one of a kind preparation in Hawaii. You can't go to the summit unless you have 4x4. You will also need to wait for your body to acclimatize at the visitors center for 1-2 hours. Plan an all afternoon trip. Arriving at the visitors center around 3 and the summit around 6 (check local sunset times). It really is the best sunset on the planet! A jacket is a good idea, it get's below freezing up there and there is always wind. I promise it will blow your mind. Due to altitude of near 14,000 feet its not a good idea for pregnant moms or kinds under 10.
